Unit 1 "Leisure & Tourism Provision in a Chosen Area"
Unit 1 = %60 of the total mark.
Within unit 1, each candidate is required to submit 4 pieces of assessment. These assessments have replaced 'coursework' and old style portfolio's which L&T pupils once had to complete. The new GCSE course, like all GCSE subjects, no longer requires pupils to complete coursework because of plaigerism (copying from one another), and the demands placed on candidates (traditionally pupils would need to submit several pieces of coursework which often involved months of hard work).
Factors asociated with Controled Assessments (CA's)
For each of the 4 CA's, the pupil will undertake 3 phases:
Phase 1 - The Question
LOW LEVEL CONTROL
Within this phase, candidates will explore what exactly the question is demanding of them. Where possible, candidates will visit the area/location.
EXPLORING AND ANALYSING THE QUESTION WILL TAKE BETWEEN 1-2 HRS.
Phase 2 - Researching
MEDIUM LEVEL CONTROL
The research phase allows the pupils to gather resources and ask questions which they will later include in their write up. Maps, graphs, photos, questionnaires written desriptions and information will be gathered and collected - this can then be used in the write up phase.
THE RESEARCH PHASE MUST TAKE NO LONGER THAN 5 HRS (2 weeks) TO COMPLETE.
Phase 3 -The write up
HIGH LEVEL CONTROL (Exam Conditions)
The write up phase is the most important phase and therefore requires the greatest level of control. As a result pupils will NOT be allowed to talk to each other, help each other or use the internet in any way. This is the phase where each candidate will produce their answer to the original question. This may take the form of a A2 poster, Powerpoint Presentation, booklet, brochure, movie, podcast etc and can be handwritten or computer processed.
THERE WILL BE STRICT TIME LIMITS (up to 5 hours) IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE WRITE UP PHASE.
